How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs After Waxing: What Actually Works

Ingrown hairs are the most common complaint we hear after waxing — and also the most preventable. If you've been dealing with red bumps, trapped hairs, or post-wax breakouts, here's what's causing them and exactly how to stop them.

Why Ingrown Hairs Happen

When hair is removed by waxing, it grows back with a tapered, sharp tip that can curl back into the skin instead of growing straight out. This is more likely when:

  • Dead skin cells block the follicle opening

  • The skin is dry or dehydrated

  • You shave between wax appointments (shaving creates a blunt, sharp edge)

  • Clothing causes friction on freshly waxed skin

  • You skip exfoliation between appointments

Before Your Wax

Exfoliate 1-2 Days Before

Use a gentle physical or chemical exfoliant on the area 1-2 days before your wax. This removes the dead skin buildup that blocks follicles and helps the wax grip the hair rather than the skin. Don't exfoliate the day of — skin will be too sensitized.

Keep Skin Hydrated

Well-hydrated skin waxes better and ingrowns less. Moisturize daily between appointments.

After your wax

Exfoliate starting day 3 — and do it consistently

This is where most people drop the ball. They exfoliate once, see improvement, then stop. Ingrowns come back. They blame waxing.

Exfoliation is not a one-time fix. It is a between-appointment habit. Dead skin cells accumulate constantly — you have to keep clearing them so hair can grow out freely.

Start on day 3 post-wax and exfoliate 2–3 times per week until your next appointment.

The Avi Body Care Scrub is non-negotiable for our clients. We carry it because it was specifically formulated for hair removal aftercare — not a generic body scrub repurposed for the bikini area. The difference matters.

It uses charcoal and kaolin clay to lift dead skin cells out of the follicle without being harsh, and it's blended with avocado oil, chamomile, and jasmine extract to calm redness and soothe irritation. The result is real exfoliation in the most sensitive areas — Brazilian zone, inner thighs, bikini line — without the rawness or dryness you get from drugstore scrubs.

Use it in the shower on damp skin, slow circular motions, 60 seconds on each area. Rinse well. Done.

Moisturize after every exfoliation session

Exfoliating without moisturizing is like washing your face and skipping SPF. You did half the job.

After you rinse the scrub, apply a lightweight, fragrance-free body lotion or body oil while the skin is still slightly damp. This seals in hydration, keeps the skin barrier intact, and reduces the friction and dryness that can make ingrowns worse.

Avoid anything with heavy fragrance in the Brazilian or bikini area — especially in the first week post-wax.

Because hormonal acne often manifests as deep, painful cysts, it can be hard to differentiate between hormonal and cystic acne. However, cystic acne is usually more severe and less predictable. It may start during puberty and persist indefinitely, demanding aggressive treatment.

Wear breathable fabrics, especially the first few days

Tight, non-breathable clothing creates friction and heat in the bikini area — two things that make ingrowns significantly worse. This is especially important right after a Brazilian.

Opt for cotton underwear and loose-fitting bottoms for at least the first 2–3 days. If you're working out, switch into your gym clothes right before and shower immediately after.

Keep your waxing appointments consistent

The longer you wax consistently, the finer and sparser your hair growth becomes. Finer hair = less friction at the follicle = fewer ingrowns. Clients who wax every 4–6 weeks on a regular schedule almost always see a dramatic improvement in ingrown hair frequency over time.

Skipping appointments and letting hair grow too long actually makes ingrowns more likely because coarser regrowth has a harder time breaking through the skin surface.

The Permanent Solution: Laser

If ingrown hairs are a chronic issue for you — especially in the bikini area or underarms — laser hair removal is worth considering. When there's no hair growing, there are no ingrowns. Many of our clients switched to laser specifically because of persistent ingrown hair problems, and it's completely resolved the issue.
